How Carlow’s firefighters are using waste vegetable oil to fuel the fightback against global warming
In August 2024, firefighters in Carlow made national and international headlines as they climbed aboard what’s believed to be the world’s first low-carbon fire engine powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
Built by HPMP Fire in Tullow, in collaboration with Acetech in Tullamore, Co Offaly, the fire engine combines state-of-the-art software with HVO, a green fuel manufactured from renewable waste such as food oils and animal fats. It also has solar panels on the roof that power the fire engine’s blue lights and charge the all-important cutting tools used to cut people out of vehicles following crashes. Dublin firefighters from Finglas and Phobsboro fire stations responded to a shed fire over the weekend. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought the the fire, which was brought under control shortly after arival. ~Dublin Fire Brigade

County Meath
Gardai in Meath North dealt with seven road traffic collisions in the Navan area on Wednesday 28th January that left resources "stretched". A Garda spokesperson said units from Navan were called to three separate incidents at the same time (1:45 approx) as the collision on the bridge at the junction of the Athlumney Road and Navan-Dublin road which brought traffic to a standstill in the town and sparked a major river search after it was mistakenly reported that someone had entered the water.

Three people were injured on Thursday 22nd January following a multi vehicle crash involving a truck and three vehilces. Fire crews from Louth Fire service, Gardaí and National Ambulance Service attended the scene.
