Galway Fire and Rescue Service held a Working At Heights Course for their new recruits last week. The recruits are from various stations throughout County Galway.

Multi Agency Exercise - Cork

On the 19th November a Boeing 737-800 en route from Scotland to Cork Airport developed a technical issue resulting in the aircraft going into a holding pattern North of Cork. The captain of the aircraft advised ATC that they believe they may have a significant hydraulic leak associated with the under carriage and are declaring an emergency.

Cork Airports emergency plan is initiated which leads to the activation of the Inter Agency Emergency Plan for Cork Airport. On landing the aircraft suffers and undercarriage collapse on the port side and on contact with the runway the port engine suffers an uncontained fire. A full evacuation of the aircraft is then commenced by the flight crew.

This was the scenario for last nights planned emergency exercise which we are required to carry out every two years as part of the airports licensing requirements.

Many thanks to all those who attended and assisted in last nights scenario. National Ambulance Service (NAS) An Garda Síochána Cork City Fire Brigade @Cork County Fire Service. Cork Airport Fire & Rescue Service

Aircraft emergencies workshop at Cork Airport -Simulations part of the global Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Gathering 2018 05 September 2018:

Cork Airport’s Fire and Rescue Service is to demonstrate a life-like aircraft emergency simulation as part of the global Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Gathering 2018 next week. Up to 40 delegates — to include members of the HSE National Ambulance Service, and other national and overseas agencies involved in emergency medicine and pre hospital emergency care — will take part in the Aircraft Emergencies Workshop at Cork Airport’s Fire Training Facility on 12 September.

A simulated aircraft incident will be staged, building on the skills of the paramedics, fire fighters, trauma doctors and other EMS personnel involved, who may be tasked to respond to aircraft emergencies in their communities or at their local airports. Commenting on the Aircraft Emergencies Workshop, Aerodrome Fire Officer at Cork Airport, Kevin Dunne said: “This is our first year hosting such a workshop and we are proud to be associated with the EMS Gathering. “This EMS skills workshop will take place in our €1.5 million Fire Training Facility and will challenge those involved on how they respond to an emergency situation such as an airline crash and work together as one inter-agency team to ensure the best possible outcome.”

Over 400 delegates — from Ireland, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America — will attend the three-day EMS Gathering in Cork from 11-13 September.

Limerick Fire & Rescue Service

Limerick City Wholetime & Retained Fire Crews seen at an exercise involving a Simulated Train Crash at Limerick Train Yard last year. The Train Driver made an emergency call to Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) and they in turn they contacted MRCC in Limerick and the Emergency Services responded, they used the training provided to ensure it was safe to go on the railway line and they were protected from moving trains, then they gained access to the trains and shut them down killing all AC power and commenced reconnaissance and casualty assessment before ANY railway personnel showed up.

This was part of the plan and it worked out really well. We had casualties placed in awkward areas like toilets and under the seats. With the help of Irish Rail Fleet Technical Services they were able to remove the seats easily so that the Firefighters could do their work. When the exercise was over a debrief was done and a log kept so that they could improve the next exercise. Overall trained was all the full time Firefighters in Limerick and 10 retained. Irish Rail trained 22 of their our own staff as Irish Rail Incident Officers, Assistant Incident Officers, Site Information Officers and Emergency Directors

Waterford Fire Service

Ropes, Ropes and more Ropes, Crews are currently in the process of refreshing their Heights Rescue Skills, all our firefighters are highly trained and skilled in this demanding and technical discipline, we are capable of all sorts of difficult rescues from heights and from below (sewers etc).

This is a highly skilled discipline and is nothing like a fun abseil. Operators can pick, lift, and lower in many many different environments and ways as we are not confined to one or two rescue rigs we can design and overcome obstacles as they arise.

Every incident is different so we have to able to cope. We would like to thank Waterford Distillery for the use of their fantastic facilities and for their hospitality while carrying out the refresher training. All of our training is done by our own Inhouse instructors and our training is overlooked and signed off by Outreach Rescue
